FishLab
Clinical chemistry for fish
FishLab is a laboratory that offers analyses of new biomarkers. Our goal is to contribute to strengthening fish health in Norwegian aquaculture.
Analyses
FishLab offers monitoring of stress and sexual maturation through analysis of cortisol and testosterone metabolites in feces. And since 0.2 g of feces is sufficient to quantify these hormones, there is no need for euthanasia.

HOW ARE THE FISH DOING - REALLY?
Prolonged and repeated stress weakens the immune system and leads to reduced growth. We offer analyses of the stress hormone cortisol in feces...
HAVE THE FISH BEGUN TO MATURE?
Monitoring testosterone in feces makes it possible to detect incipient sexual maturation before physiological changes are evident...
DOES THE FISH HAVE A GOOD
VITAMIN D STATUS?
Vitamin D regulates the absorption of phosphorus and calcium, but is also very important for the immune system. A lack of vitamin D can increase the risk of infections.
IS THE FISH READY FOR RELEASE?
The levels of the hormones thyroxine T4 and cortisol coincide with maximum seawater tolerance. Measurement therefore provides new insight into the process....

How to take samples
Feces
The fish is anesthetized, but does not need to be killed. You take the sample yourself with simple equipment that we provide – and send it to us for analysis.
Plasma
The samples should be taken by authorized fish health personnel. The samples can be frozen at -18°C before submission.

Research & Development
FishLab is involved in several development projects.
Here are some of them.
